About All About Dogs

Our History

All About Dogs was established by Renée deVilliers in the summer of 1996 with the desire to educate owners in all manners of “dog.” Over the years, Renée attended many seminars, lectures and conferences on animal behaviour, training, aggression, health, genetics and agility, by both Canadian and international presenters. From this base of knowledge, she developed a highly successful system of raising and training dogs through positive reward training, based on an in depth knowledge of canine behaviour, genetics and physical development.

Over the past 16 years All About Dogs has been providing group and private training as well as consultations for aggression and other behaviour problems. In January 2015, All About Dogs finally found a facility large enough to encompass all our programs and services in one centre that is now: “all about dogs” all the time!

Philosophy & Training Methods

At All About Dogs, we believe positive reinforcement training is the best way to create a happy and confident dog who understands what is expected of him.

We teach owners how to establish boundaries at home and employ problem behaviour prevention strategies from early puppyhood onwards. Training and behaviour problems are resolved without the punishment- based techniques that commonly result in fear, aggression, or deterioration of the bond between dog and owner.

Instead we utilize positive methods based on well-established learning theories and behavioural science tht are humane, practical and effective. We teach marker-based training, either with a clicker or word, combined with rewards of all kinds (e.g., food, toys, play, and praise).

All our training programs reflect a comprehensive understanding of the dog’s natural behaviour, and take in respect learning abilities as well as the dog’s mental and physical developmental stages. In our classes we strive to create a relaxed and enjoyable learning experience as we believe that the human part of the equation needs as much support and understanding as the canine component.

Most people learn more quickly when not subjected to criticisms and negative feedback, and therefore, a positive approach to the training of the people is an integral part of all our programs.

Our Mission

Our mission at All About Dogs is to provide the education and support dog owners need from the time they adopt a puppy or shelter dog to enable dog owners to deepen their understanding, respect and delight in their canine companions as well as create dogs who are welcome members of our community.

Let us help you bring out the best in your dog!

Our Vision

At All About Dogs our vision is to help reduce irresponsible breeding practices and ownership through owner education. We endeavour to improve the lives of dogs through positive training and raise their standard of living by offering healthy foods, appropriate toys, training tools and education about accident and injury prevention.

We promote fun activities between dogs and owners that lead to successful relationships based on mutual respect. The All About Dogs team makes every effort to build a creative and supportive network of positive trainers, who act as heralds of positive reinforcement-based training in our community.

Our centre will be the platform for creating a stronger presence and voice for positive and successful training techniques and to give people a viable and accessible alternative to many of the harsh, outdated methods currently being show cased and popularized by the media.

Services & Training We Provide

At All About Dogs emphasis is placed on modification of the dog’s behaviour through non-coercive and non-aversive methods.  Using aggression to cure aggression does not work.

Agility is a fabulously fun sport that can be played by people and dogs of all ages and sizes! You and your dog navigate a series of obstacles using only verbal commands and body language.

Most dogs love to run, jump and climb, so they quickly get hooked on training and playing with you which develops a strong relationship between you and your dog.

Regular grooming stimulates the skin and improves vitality. It keeps your dog’s fur free of dirt, tangles and allows skin to breathe. Grooming is essential to your dog’s health and well being!

Training is the best way to create a happy and confident dog who understands what is expected of them. All classes are progressive and skills are built from the first class to the last.

As responsible owners, it is important to know the variety of hazards that pets can unwittingly be exposed to and prevent the possibility of injury, illness, and premature death or disability.

Good quality food in the right balance is the foundation for maintaining the health of your dog.  It can improve behaviour, reduce vet visits and significantly help with the management of allergies.

Puppy Training starts with our First Paw Forward program – designed to take advantage of a puppy’s early learning and socialization period and is open to pups 8 – 16 weeks old.

We offer show handling classes for those looking to prepare their young dogs for the conformation show ring under the guidance of our highly acclaimed instructor, Shianna Fairley.

What our clients say

  • I just wanted to take a moment and thank you for mentioning about your new chiropractor. I was able to make an appointment for Hudson on Dec. 19th at your new facility, and although he didn’t like the adjustment at all, it managed to subside his limp immensely. Hudson is also seeing the chiropractor on a weekly basis to work on some of the tenderness he seems to have. Like I said, he doesn’t like it, and he has to be muzzled, but it truly is doing wonders for him.

If it wasn’t for you and your team mentioning it, I wouldn’t have thought to bring Hudson back to a chiropractor, so I thank you immensely!

  • All About Dogs has been an incredible support during this first year of my pup’s life. From the very first puppy class where she learned how to play properly (and I learned how to work with her 10-week old brain!) through to the fun, fast-paced agility classes we continue to enjoy, Renee and her team have been there every step of the way. They take the time to respond to questions, offer personalized instruction and advice, and embody positive reinforcement in all their methods and approaches. They really care about their clients and find a way to connect individually with each dog. Among the best advice I received was to take puppy agility concurrently with the early puppy training class. My pup’s confidence grew with each class and our bond was strengthened by this perfect combination of structure and fun. I see the benefits of this solid foundation in my training and agility work, but also in social situations and out on the street. People can’t believe how calm and well behaved she is for her age! This is an incredible facility with great equipment and room for each activity, surpassed only by the staff who welcome you in. Thank you for everything!!

  • I feel very lucky by ending up at AAD and meeting Renee, Brittany and the rest of the team. I honestly don’t know how my stubborn little english bulldog baby would turn out if not for the gentle and patient guidance provided by Renee. She would notice the smallest detail and correct you, which would magically change everything. It feels like Renee had experience with every possible issue that could appear in bringing up a puppy, training an adult dog and … educating the owner. Also, dogs ADORE Renee, you have to see how the look at her and how they listen to her. I would absolutely recommend AAD to those who care about their doggys and would like to establish great relationship with them.

  • We found Renee through a friend of ours who works at the local vets, and what a stroke of luck. Angus loves his agility so much he cries while he waits his turn. Renee makes the classes fun for everyone, positive training all round, dogs and owners 😉 All About Dogs has opened my eyes to the fun and enjoyment you and your canine buddy can have, the possibilities seem endless. Renee has saved my dog from a life of boring walks and monotonous days on the couch. We have done trick training, agility, nutritional seminars and a first aid course at All about Dogs and enjoyed every thing they have to offer. The facility is top notch, clean and spacious. All the equipment is great, even the flooring is designed for your dogs comfort and safety! I cannot say enough about how great Renee and her team is!!

  • Taking my dog to All About Dogs is the best thing I’ve ever done for my dog and for myself. The classes are so much fun, the facilities are great and really well taken care of and everyone there is friendly. Renee is the best instructor, and I’ve been to a few different obedience classes around the city. Not only does she take the time to give each dog/person individual attention and instruction but she really helps me understand what I am trying to teach him and why. I first went for an obedience refresher for my dog and we are now in our 4th agility class. My dog’s behaviour has improved drastically and I have a much better understanding of him and his behaviours. I recommend to anyone and everyone looking into classes for their dog to go to All About Dogs.

  • I love my training at All about Dogs. I have learned more in the last two months than I have in the last two years. Renee is awesome and her comments are helpful and insightful and always encouraging. I leave class feeling so pumped. The House League is so much fun, everyone there is ready to give a shout out when you are finished your run.
Thanks Renee and the gang at All about Dogs. So looking forward to training in the new space.

  • I would unconditionally recommend AAD to EVERY new dog owner and every other dog owner too. READ MORE to see why

All About Dogs has a LOT to offer from Classes in Agility, Rally Obedience, Basic Obedience, Show Handling, Puppy Manners…Fun Matches and Trials in CARO Rally…a wonderful winter Agility House league…seminars and focused sessions, hosted seminars, grooming, daycare…

What is it that makes AAD stand out as an exceptional business?

Renee has a depth of knowledge in dogs, training, behaviour, and communicates with firmness but kind and supportive. She is warm and welcoming and makes you feel like she is with you as a part of your team to bring out the best in your dog(s), as a concerned and committed friend.

She is quick to smile and laugh and it is obvious that she loves all the dogs that come to AAD and is there to help all the humans.
She observes the interaction of human and dog and with quick analysis determines exactly what needs to be adjusted to get the results!

It is amazing to think back = how far we have come! I am so proud of my dogs and how awesome they are doing in Performance venues from Agility, CKC and CARO Rally, and CKC Obedience and I owe debt to training at AAD.

Her facility is probably the most aware and accommodating and compassionate for the handlers with dogs that may need more space or with special needs. By far, a stress reducer for those handlers to be sure.

I cannot say enough about having the support of your mentor, teacher, friend ringside as you take to the competition ring for the first time!

    Her team!!!!!
Brittany is magic! I cannot begin to express my gratitude to the huge impact she has made on my Little One. She is such a kind and gentle soul and is always ready to share an insight or two or a demonstration that almost instantly gets a training challenge gone!

I can’t wait to get my next puppy because we will begin right and continue through all the days of their lives.

  • Midas and I joined All About Dogs about 3 years ago late summer. My husband thought we should do a refresher obedience course. Which then turned into intro to agility.

I was worried because Midas‘s first introduction to Agility was quite scary at another school so I was rather pessimistic. I was so impressed by Renee’s teaching it was right down to the basics… I was wondering what the “phone book” perch was all about…. well 2 1/2 years later Midas and I are loving it… we like to call it “Agility Fever”. Both of us look forward to class every Saturday, Renee has helped through our own personal struggles (weave poles) which I am happy to say we now have gotten the groove and Midas loves it. I just want to say “Thanks Renee” for being such a wonderful trainer and most of all the thanks for your constant compassion, kindness and fun loving spirit that you are. Lots of love always!

  • As a first time puppy parent to a very boisterous and extroverted puppy, we needed all the help we could get! Through our participation in beginner agility, obedience and rally classes, as well as the invaluable socialization and training offered through the puppy playcare program, my now adolescent dog is a true pleasure to live with. I honestly don’t think this would have been possible without the support of the amazing team at All About Dogs. Highly recommended to anyone interested to develop a stronger relationship with their dog and have a lot of fun in the process.

Happy Client with a Stronger Relationship with Her Dog!
  • Before going to see Renee at All About Dogs, I was at the end of my rope. I had a 90 lb Rhodesian Ridgeback who lunged and snarled at both people and dogs. He couldn’t be crated without screaming for hours, and he couldn’t be left loose without destroying things. When in the house, he would whine for hours unless I physically touched him from the time I got home to the time we went to sleep. I had taken him to about six dog academies and tried about as many techniques, from softness to physically pushing him around – nothing worked. It had gotten to the point I couldn’t bring people into my house, and every walk my husband and I would end up fighting about him. No one could babysit him in the case of an emergency, and he couldn’t be trusted around anyone or anything who was not intimate family.

After the first private, Renee told me I needed to revamp my entire relationship with Toboe. Every single thing he did, he needed my permission. If he was not listening, he lost whatever privilege he had – because it was a privilege. Every single aspect of his life had to be regulated, and he had to learn to earn my attention through his good choices. All the other training places had focused on the training “sessions” – not revamping every action. At first it was exhausting; even making it through a door could take ten minutes as he dead refused to do what I asked. If he whined, he wasn’t allowed to be on the couch – you could almost see the shock on his face at first, but eventually he ended up seeking that consistency.

After a few months of privates, he had calmed down enough to do some Scent work, then Rally Obedience classes. The more important changes happened at home. He stopped whining and destroying things, allowed himself to be crated, and started respecting me and my husband more. On walks he might start to react, but then he would look up at me instead of lunging and dragging me. And when I decided to get a puppy, Renee helped me introduce them so that zero jealousy or food guarding happened.

  • I’ve trained with my little 9.6 pound miniature schnauzer, Smidgin, at several Toronto trainers before entering the hall at All About Dogs. The first impression was amazing. So clean and professional. All About Dogs was the first place where Smidgin (who can be pretty stand-offish) was relaxed and greeted Renée, and worked with her without hesitation. Smidgin is a good read of people’s energy, and she loves working at All About Dogs – I think because of the staff – they are calm and love the dogs. We’ve completed a flyball course, and have been taking agility courses since February 2014. We are now hitting the advanced level, and Smidgin is excelling and becoming more confident. I believe Renée’s dedication to our success is one reason we’re excelling. Renée works with your dog’s personality and helps bring out their best in any training she does. I recommend All About Dogs to everyone I know who has a puppy or dog!

  • I can never say enough good things about All About Dogs, Renee and her gang are amazing with pets. My Monty went for puppy classes and loved it so much that we started agility and even were in the house league. Never was there a time he wasn’t happy to see them or be there. They truly care not just about the pets but their owners too. Kind and effective pet training. I wouldn’t recommend anyone else!
