As you may or may not know there are a number of different games that you and your dog can enter other than the “Standard” agility. Each organization includes a variety games available for dogs at each level and each game is designed to hone a particular set of agility skills.

The game of Snookers is a tricky “sudden death” strategy game that requires the handler to maintain a close connection with their dog and to be able to think on their feet should things not go according to plan. “Sudden death” means that if you make a mistake the judge will whistle you off course and not allow you to complete your run. (Wha, wha wha..)

I put together this workshop to help handlers learn more about the skills needed this game and to develop their own strategies based on their teams skills. Learning how to play “Snooker” can be an expensive lesson if you are trying to figure it out when at competitions.

So! We will start with:

Introduction to the rules of the game:

Snookers requires you to design an opening strategy to gain points, but each step of the way has to be completed successfully before you can move forward to the next segment. Misunderstanding the rules can result in the dreaded judge’s whistle!

Strategies:

  • How to play to your teams strengths
  • Designing your opening course – yup! You gotta make it up!
  • Plan A and Plan B ( and maybe even plan C!) being ready to alter your plan if things go awry
  • Whoops! What do I do if my dog drops a bar? Misses a contact or fumbles the weaves
  • How to navigate “Combination obstacles”
  • Why is this judge yelling out numbers??

Once we have covered the basic outline of the game we will then work through a set of skills that you and your dog can learn and practice to help you succeed. Keep in mind that learning how to think on your feet and be responsive to new developments can only help you out in other games too!

A sample course!!

We will set up a snookers course to use as a practical example. We will discuss the potential courses and options and develop a plan for each team member and then run the course. The objective is for you to get a chance to try out what you’ve learning with minimal pressure with options for a “do over!” Every agility competitors dream come true is a “do over”.

For those of you signing up for House League or getting ready to trial, this is your chance to get your mind wrapped around the complexities of snooker!
